The CELIAS experiment for the measurement of the mass, ionic charge, and isotopic abundance of the solar wind and of suprathermal particles was successfully launched with SOHO spacecraft on 2 Dec 1995. CELIAS consists of 3 sensors based on time of flight measurements: CTOF and MTOF are optimized for studying the charge and Mass distributions, respectively, of the solar wind; and STOF is designed to measure Suprathermal particle composition and charge states. Early results from CELIAS indicate the presence of a number of elements (e.g Cr and Ni) not previosly identified in the solar wind. A rich assortment of solar wind isotopes has also been identified for the first time, many of which (e.g. Fe 54 and 56; Ni 58, 60, 62) have not been detected either in solar energetic particle populations or using spectroscopic techniques.
